A man with a dream is a good thing; a man with a dream and a plan is something special. Chad Zessin has both a long-standing dream and a current plan, so he's sitting atop the mountain!
Chad, a life-long resident of Walton County, from the community of New Harmony, is a fall graduate of Northwest Florida State College and has moved to Gainesville for his first semester at the University of Florida. His dream and his plan are to earn a Bachelor's of Science Degree in Biology, be accepted at a good medical school and become an ophthalmologist. He's been working toward this goal for years and has concentrated on science and math while an NWFSC student. With an overall 3.71 GPA, it seems as if his concentration has worked out well for him.
Chad was the most recent recipient of the DeFuniak Spring Kiwanis Club Scholarship administered by the NWFSC Foundation. The club's selection was more than appropriate in this case since Chad was a member of the inaugural Key Club at Paxton High School. Community service with a pay-it-forward attitude is something that makes up part of Chad's character. "I enjoy doing whatever I can whenever I can to help others," he said. "I think that's one reason I want to be an ophthalmologist. After graduating from medical school, I want to come back to Walton County to open a practice and serve the people who have supported me."
Chad chose to come to NWFSC because of its reputation as a really good college with graduates performing in the top tier at upper division universities across the state. Other reasons were its close-to-home location with a campus center in DeFuniak Springs, as well as his wanting to follow a family tradition established when older brother, Blake, graduated from NWFSC and went on to become a Civil Engineer. As he completed his AA degree requirements, Chad credited "the entire Math Department" and Dr. Philip Heise, Biology professor, as having a special influence on him.
He enjoys hunting and fishing in his spare time, but his life statement is his guiding principle. "I try to enjoy life, do as much living as I can and help others whenever possible."
